Welcome

Hi, I’m Lindsay

Hi! I’m Lindsay. I’m glad you stopped by. Welcome to Our Future Homestead where I share all about

*Cooking from Scratch
*Preserving the Harvest
*Growing Food

When it comes to food, these are the three topics I love most. I am in my happy place when I get to be planning for, preparing, or working in my garden. When I am able to harvest from my own garden, it gives me great joy to either take that food and prepare seasonally fresh recipes with it or preserve it for later on.

If I can’t grow it, I want to be at my local u-pick farms or farmers markets finding the freshest items to cook and preserve.

Our Future Homestead a Reality

This summer we have seen our dreams come true. After over six years of dreaming, praying, and waiting, we found our future homestead on 12 acres in central Wisconsin. We have been exploring our land and planning up all that we want to do with it over the coming years.

Before that, we live in a neighborhood in a large town. We had an average sized back yard to do our gardening. The last two years I stretched my gardening knowledge hoping to get ready for a large scale garden someday. We had raised beds, straw bale gardens, and I really learned a lot about building soil and compost. I wanted to be the most prepared I could be for when we got land and livestock. So the last few years I spent:

  • Perfecting my homemade yeast and sourdough breads
  • Learning about different ways to start seeds and saving seeds from our open-pollinated and heirloom plants
  • Sourcing the best fertilizers (we found out rabbit poo was so great and it even turned into breeding meat rabbits in our backyard)
  • Preserving foods in new ways (I finally pulled out that pressure canner and learned how to can low acid foods and meat! So rewarding)

A Bit More About Me

I have been married for almost 20 years to a very patient man who works very hard to make our dreams come true. We have three children spanning from preK to teenage years.

I spent most of the last 20 years teaching elementary school. I am currently out of the classroom to work on Our Future Homestead and all that God has blessed us with on this property.

I’m an outgoing-introvert who needs a lot of time and space to think, and also a bit of a procrastinator-perfectionist, which makes it hard to get all the things finished. But I love to get those projects started and work on them all. Anyone else with half a dozen unfinished books on the bedside table?

I hope you hang around to learn some new skills along with me. I’ll be busy creating and also dreaming of our future homestead with my chickens, dogs, hogs, and a beautiful faced milk cow.

Hope to see you around!
