How to Make Homemade Granola
This simple homemade granola is easy to make and a hit with everyone I have shared it with. It is a good replacement for store-bought breakfast cereal by just adding milk. We also like to add it to yogurt, some fruit or jam and have a parfait. Learn here how to make simple homemade granola.
I like that this recipe is simple. It is good just like it is. It can also be added to if you want to change things up a bit too.

Another Homemade Item to Check off the List
We used to buy granola from the store occasionally. However, it is expensive and most of the time just so-so in taste.
When I decided to wean my kids off of store-bought cereal, I knew I needed to be able to give them something that is easy to get to in the morning if needed. We like to get a good dose of protein in (like in this hearty breakfast skillet), but sometimes we just need fast.
This homemade granola has been a hit with the kids. Even if they are begging for their old normal cereal, they have been loving having this granola around. My youngest even packs it for a snack on its own to take to school.
Ingredients for Homemade Granola
- Organic Rolled Oats
- Pecans
- Shredded Coconut (sweetened or unsweetened)
- Butter
- Oil (we use avocado oil, coconut would also be good)
- Maple syrup
- Brown sugar
- Salt
- Cinnamon
- Vanilla Extract
Use the Best Ingredients You Can
Because the ingredients are pretty simple in this homemade granola, we want to make sure they are the best we can buy.
I always get organic oats because they are so heavily sprayed with pesticides when conventionally grown.
For oil, you can use any kind, but we stay away from seed oils for our health (vegetable, canola).
Maple syrup is local if we can get it. We use the real stuff because it just tastes the best and is the best for us.

Step by Step Instructions – Homemade Granola
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the oats, pecans, and coconut.
6 cups oats, 1 cup chopped pecans, 1 1/2 cup shredded coconut - In a separate bowl, mix together the melted butter, oil, maple syrup, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.
1/4 cup butter, 1/2 cup oil, 1/2 cup maple syrup, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 1/2 tsp salt, 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp vanilla - Pour the ingredients over the oat mixture in the large bowl and mix up real well.
- Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and pour the granola mixture onto the baking sheet.
- Spread out the mixture evenly on the sheet.
- Bake the granola at 300 degrees for about 45 minutes to one hour. While baking, leave the granola alone and do not stir.
- Bake until the granola is a golden brown. Remove from the oven to cool on the baking sheet.
- Once cool, break apart the granola and place into a glass jar for storage.
- We usually eat the granola within a few weeks. If you think you will not eat this amount before it goes stale, you can always half the recipe to start.

Notes
If you want to add in dried fruit, add before baking and mix into the ingredients. We like to use mini dried blueberries.
Wanting to add chocolate chips? I would use the minis and add in after the granola has come out of the oven and cooled for a bit. Before completely cool, mix in the chocolate chips. Careful not to mix too early or it will be a melted mess.
Add-In Ideas for Your Homemade Granola
I love this recipe just the way it is. But here are some ideas to add and make it a bit different from time to time depending on your family’s tastes.
- Add dried fruit like blueberries, raisins, or other small pieces of fruit.
- Add slivered almonds instead of pecans.
- Need some chocolate? Mini chocolate chips can be added after baking and cooling down.
How to Best Store this Homemade Granola
I like to use a large half gallon mason jar to store our granola. The glass doesn’t impart a funky plastic taste and keeps it fresh for weeks.
