Top Homesteaders to Follow on YouTube
If you haven’t yet found that YouTube is an amazing source for homestead knowledge, you should head on over and check out these top homesteaders to follow on YouTube that I have been watching and learning from over the last few years.
I am always finding new accounts to follow with a vast array of knowledge. From gardening to heritage cooking, from animal husbandry, to how to find a homestead. There are so many topics that really need to be seen and walked through.
My only wish is that I had some more time to sit down and watch videos to glean all this knowledge.
Can you really Learn anything from YouTube?
It’s funny how different people react to what they think you can learn on Youtube. When I have an issue with the tech side of my blog and I ask my husband, he almost always says, “Did you check, YouTube?” I nearly always have not. And yet, when I do, I will find my answer fairly quick.
Other times I’ll be chatting with people and say something about what I learned on Youtube or how they could learn something, and I have gotten the strangest looks. How could I suggest that there would be anything educational on there is what some of their faces or even words say.
While I am sure there is some sketchy things on the website, what I have found is invaluable to my homesteading journey.
I hope you find inspiration and knowledge like I have from some, if not all on the list below.
Top Homesteaders to Follow on YouTube 2019
- Jess from Roots and Refuge
Jess is a relatively new find for me, but she is hands down my all time favorite YouTuber. She is so inspiring, knowledgable, and has great garden tours. I think my all time favorite video of hers is called Homesteading Skills to Learn While You Wait for Your Farm
Her talk about what you can do while you wait to actually get your homestead spoke right to my heart because she had lived the same thing – waiting for her dream. If you haven’t seen any of Jess’s videos, I can’t recommend her channel highly enough. - Lisa Bass from Farmhouse On Boone
I love watching Lisa’s videos. She is quick and to the point with whatever she is doing. Probably because she has 5 kids (with 6th on the way!) and needs to get it all done when she can! Yet, she is always so informative and I have learned so much from her. If you check out her channel, you will find a lot of from-scratch recipes and simple sewing tutorials. There and also videos from their new 7 acre homestead. I actually purchased a blogging course, Create Your Blog Dream from her when I started my blog, and I am so glad I did. I had purchased another course that just feel flat of my expectations, yet Lisa’s was exactly what I needed to get up and running and stay motivated. - Jill Winger from The Prairie Homestead
I think that The Prairie Homestead is one of the first blogs I ever found and read much back in the day. I’m sure you have heard of Jill and all that she is doing with her homestead in Wyoming. Her YouTube channel is relatively new, but she always has so much great information to share on it just like she does on her blog when it comes to from-scratch cooking, homestead animals, and gardening in a cold climate, along with how to use essential oils on the homestead. - Shay from the Elliot Homestead
The Elliot Homestead is also one of the first homesteading blogs I found. My husband actually brought home her first cookbook before I even found it. I have always loved Shay’s storytelling. It’s not often that I will sit down and read a whole blog post that isn’t a recipe or a how-to. Yet, Shay has a beautiful way with words. I have always enjoyed her ramblings blogs about homestead kids, what can and does go wrong on a homestead, and so much more. She has brought her storytelling to her YouTube channel (also new this year), and it is great. I just watched her carrot harvest/storing vegetables for winter and I learned SO much! Definitely a must check out if you haven’t seen this channel yet. - Justin Rhodes
I found the Rhodes when they were about to go out on their Great American Farm Tour. This was a couple of years ago. The movie of their journey actually fueled the fire I had to continue this dream of mine to have a homestead. Now the Rhodes have been back home and working on their homestead for the last few years. Their videos are full of helpful information for every single aspect of how to start a homestead.
- The Homesteading Family
Josh and Caroline live with their many children and are homesteading in Idaho. Close to my heart with how long we lived in Eastern Washington and the seasons being so similar. One thing about this channel I love is how much knowledge Caroline has. When it comes to real true homesteading skills in the kitchen, she knows a lot. She includes old fashioned skills of preserving foods, canning, baking bread, rendering lard, and so much more. And the homestead kitchen is only part of their channel. There are videos on homestead animals, gardening, and homeschooling too. - The Hollar Homestead
If you haven’t heard of the Hollar family this last year, they have been on a great adventure. Similar to what the Rhodes family did when they took off on The Great American Farm Tour, the Hollars decided to quit the rat race, sell everything they owned, and take off looking for the best place to homestead. Their YouTube videos chronicle their trip around the US and why they chose to settle where they did. And now they are now starting a homestead from scratch. They are kind, humble, and inspirational.
Anything I missed?
Any amazing homesteaders on Youtube that I missed? I am always looking for more inspiration and great places to learn more about homesteading as I am waiting for our future homestead. Who would you add to the list of top homesteaders to follow on YouTube?
Great info for future reference! Will definitely check them out! Thank you!

Great list! I love finding new people to follow who are into what I’m into!
Thanks! Me too since most of the people in my life around me aren’t into those things!
This is a great tip. I’m already following Lisa Bass ans Shay, I will absolutely check out the other bloggers you mentioned!
